Bowflex HVT Review

Bowflex is one of the top fitness manufacturers in the world. Based in Vancouver, Washington, Bowflex of America (now named Nautilus Inc.) has been marketing, and selling products since 1986. Here we have the Bowflex HVT or High Velocity Training, a machine that’s good for beginners and advanced users. In 18 minutes, the HVT can provide you a full – body workout that lets you burn fat and build muscle at the same time.  The HVT is roughly 7 feet tall, 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. It comes with three sets of pulleys located at the top, left and right, and base of the machine. You can adjust the tension of the pulleys just like resistance bands. The HVT also comes with curved bars in the center for multiple grips, and another set angling from the base to the center.

The Bowflex HVT comes with 3 pre -programmed workouts: Sprint to build power, speed, and help with recovery. Circuit to build strength, improve form, and increase range of motion. Last but not least, Builder to also build strength and endurance. Another cool feature, it has Bluetooth technology and comes with a free mobile app you can download for Apple or Android. The app gives you access to 50 exercise videos led by trainers that you can send to the HVT using Bluetooth. This way, you are never bored with your new toy. Bowflex also claims that the HVT can give you the calorie burn of a 1.5 mile run, and 5 times more muscle activation than regular strength training.

My Rating

I give the Bowflex HVT a 9 out of 10. It gets a big plus in my book due to simultaneous strength and cardio training. It’s a great product if your goal is to lose weight and fat. It’s great for high intensity cardio. Combine this with your weight training at the gym, and you can become a lean, mean, fat burning machine. Wouldn’t you agree?

  1. I like your post. It is concise, well organized and informative. It would definitely inspire me click on your links for further info.

  2. Hey William!
Man, your article couldn’t come at a better time for me. See, I live in this really quiet gated neighborhood. There’s a little gym which is seldom used and, there, in the corner, sits a Bowflex machine. It’s missing one pulley set (for leg and back routines). Other than that, it works pretty well. My question is, can I do the chest and arm routines which are displayed on the exercise chart next to it, and complement the rest with free weights, which are available (and complete!). Also, I do light swimming 2 to 3 times per week just to de-stress. Any suggestions on which Bowflex exercise I could add to complement my swimming routine? Thanks for a great review of a great machine! Talk soon!

    • Hey there. Since you do swimming, you should do more strength work. You got cardio down with swimming. So all you need now is strength training

  3. I like the breakdown of everything on the machine here. I always loved the commercials late at night with Chuck Norris. Great review!

  4. Interesting machine. Can you really get an effective workout in only 18 minutes? Is it possible to build your own workouts?

    • Combining strength and cardio? 18 minutes is plenty of time. If you feel like you haven’t worked up enough sweat, you can always go another round. You can build your oqn if you’d like, but it’s not necessary since the HVT comes with its own workouts built in and with the Bowflex App

  5. I did not know that the Bowflex came with workouts for you to do. I really like this idea and it sounds like the perfect machine for me. I do workout at the gym, but I would love to be able to have some work out equipment at home as well. The price is really not bad, given the brand and quality 🙂

  6. Hi Will, when you say “you may have a hard time using this machine if you are on the short side”, how short are we talking? I’m 5 foot 4, do you think I would struggle with this? Or do have another recommendation for my height challenged self? 🙂

  7. Thanks for keeping everything straight to the point, making this easy to read, and for not wasting my time! Truthfully, it is a bit pricey for me right now, but I’m glad you’ve taken the time to share.

  8. Sounds like a good machine! Just wondering how many calories it can burn if picked the 18 minutes work-out?
